Beyond being an iconic, history-laden city, Paris is home to many cultural sites that are accessible to wheelchair users. While accessibility has long been, and still is, a real challenge in the capital, a number of venues have now adapted their facilities to welcome every visitor in the best possible conditions.
Here is a selection of must-see Paris landmarks accessible to people with reduced mobility.
1. The Eiffel Tower
The symbol of Paris, the Eiffel Tower is partially accessible to wheelchair users: the lifts go up to the first and second floors, where you can take in the breathtaking views the landmark offers over the capital. Only the top floor is off-limits, due to technical constraints, but accessible toilets and an assistance service are on hand to make the visit easier.
2. The Louvre Museum
One of the most famous museums in the world has put several measures in place to make it accessible to wheelchair users. The main entrance through the Pyramid has lifts and access ramps, and inside, lifts and platforms make it easier to move between the different galleries. Worth knowing too: wheelchairs are available free of charge for visitors who need one.
3. The Musée d’Orsay
Housed in a former railway station, the Musée d’Orsay holds major Impressionist works by Monet, Van Gogh and Renoir, in a magnificent setting open to all. It is fully adapted for wheelchair users, with ramps, lifts and accessible toilets now available throughout the building.
4. The Tuileries and Luxembourg Gardens
For a stroll in the open air, these iconic gardens are largely accessible thanks to their flat, well-maintained paths. The Luxembourg Gardens even offer dedicated areas with benches and rest spots designed for visitors with reduced mobility.
5. A boat trip on the Seine
Discovering Paris from the Seine is a one-of-a-kind experience. Several cruise companies, such as Les Bateaux Parisiens, offer accessible boats with ramps and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs. A pleasant, easy way to admire the city’s finest landmarks.
